How we work on thickened nails

We work on dystrophic nails, meaning nails that have changed in thickness, shape or structure, after talking through where the change may have come from. We look for the cause rather than only improving how the nail looks.

The nail is thick and hard to cut

A thickened nail presses in your shoe. People come to us with, for example, a nail misshapen after an injury, a split nail or toenails that crack. If the nail has turned green, have a look at our page on green bacteria on nails.

We work on the nail and test it if needed

We assess the nail, then gradually reduce its thickness with specialist podiatry tools. If the look of the nail raises doubts, we suggest a mycological test. Please come to your visit without polish or gel on your nails.

The nail presses less and is easier to care for

After the procedure the nail is thinner and smoother, so it is easier to trim. Finally, we apply a care product and tell you how to look after the nail between visits. If you are planning a podological pedicure, we can work on your nails during the same visit.

Our approach

We also work with nails after injuries

A thick or misshapen nail often has a history, such as an old knock or constant pressure in a shoe. That is why we also look at how you load your feet day to day, as this helps us plan further care.

We work on a changed nail without rushing and tell you clearly what we see. We do not promise the nail will look the way it used to. What we do promise is careful work and an honest conversation about what to expect.

Thickened nails: what to know

It is better to wait until the nail has been assessed. Polish and gel cover the nail, so it is harder to notice changes in its colour and thickness. If you suspect fungus, hold off on painting until the test result is in. After the visit we will tell you when polish will not get in the way of care.

Straight across and not too short, without rounding the corners. It is easier after a warm foot bath, when the nail softens. Use sharp nippers made for toenails. Do not force cutting or filing the thick part. We will take care of that layer at the practice.

You cannot tell by eye. Nails with fungus and nails thickened for another reason can look alike. That is why we suggest a mycological test, which takes about 20 minutes and costs 150–200 PLN. Whatever the result, we work on the nail and advise you on next steps.

Come in for an assessment. After a knock or another injury, a nail can grow more slowly or unevenly, and a broken nail easily catches on socks. Until your visit, protect the toe from pressure in your shoe. We look at the toe, work on the damaged area and tell you whether toenail reconstruction is worth considering.

Usually several, because a changed nail grows out slowly. You see the first difference right after the procedure, but the new part of the nail needs time to grow. That is why we plan a series of visits and check the nail each time. We agree on the number of visits after the first assessment.

In the vast majority of cases the procedure is well tolerated. We work calmly, and you can tell us at any moment if something feels unpleasant. We then slow down or take a break. If an area is sensitive, we use soothing and protective products.
