Toenails after gel polish: onycholysis and green nail

Onycholysis after gel polish, when the nail plate comes away from the nail bed, happens when frequent gel applications have weakened the nail. The plate gets thinner, and a gap forms underneath. Moisture easily collects in that gap, and green nail can develop. What should you do? Don't cover the nail with another layer of gel polish, keep it short and come in to have the lifted nail cleaned. We're writing about toenails, because that's what we work with at ORTHOPODO. Below we explain why this happens, how to care for the nail and when to show it to a podologist.

Why a toenail weakens after gel polish

Gel polish itself isn’t the nail’s enemy. What usually harms the nail plate is how the polish goes on and comes off, for example:

  • heavy filing of the nail before the polish goes on, which thins it every time,
  • peeling or prying off gel polish instead of taking it off gently, because layers of the nail come away with it,
  • one set straight after another, with no break for the nail to rest and grow.

A toenail damaged by gel polish is thinner, softer and lifts from the nail bed more easily. On the feet, add pressure from shoes and small knocks while walking, which a weakened nail copes with less well. The same applies to builder gel, so onycholysis after gel nails has similar causes.

Onycholysis after gel polish: how to spot it and what to do

The lifted part of the nail turns white, dull or yellowish, because there’s air underneath instead of the nail bed. Often you only notice it after taking off the gel polish that was hiding the change.

What you can do at home:

  • don’t put new gel polish on a lifted nail,
  • trim the lifted part so it doesn’t catch on socks and shoes,
  • after washing, dry your feet thoroughly, including under the free edge of the nail.

Don’t clean the gap under the nail with sharp tools, as this can easily lift the nail further.

At the practice we clean the lifted part and work on the nail plate with specialist podiatry instruments, following hygiene standards. Cleaning one nail takes about 30 minutes and costs from 70 PLN. We describe cleaning a lifted nail step by step on the service page.

Can I put gel polish on a lifted nail?

It’s better to wait until the lifted part has grown out and the new nail sticks to the nail bed along its whole length. Gel polish on onycholysis hides the gap but doesn’t close it. Under the polish you can’t see whether the nail keeps lifting, and trapped moisture encourages green nail. The same goes for regular nail polish: while the nail grows out, it’s worth leaving it bare.

Green nail under gel polish

Green nail after gel polish usually appears where the polish or the nail has lifted and a gap has formed. Water gets into the gap when you wash, and so does sweat from your foot in a closed shoe. The bacteria love moisture and stain the nail green, from a light to a very dark shade. Under gel or gel polish that has started to lift, the change can stay hidden for a long time.

At your visit we work on the stained part of the nail and explain how to keep the nail dry until the next check. We write more about green nail on a separate page.

Can I paint over green nail?

Don’t cover it with regular polish or gel polish until the green part has grown out and been worked on. Polish traps moisture under the nail and hides the colour, so you can’t see whether the stain is shrinking. It’s nothing to be embarrassed or worried about: green nail also happens to people who look after their feet carefully. You can go back to coloured polish once the nail is clean and dry.

Nail recovery after gel polish

Nail recovery after gel polish is mostly about letting the nail grow out in peace. The damaged layers won’t return to how they were, but the new nail growing from the base can be healthy.

Simple habits help the nail recover after gel polish:

  • a break from gel polish until the weakened part has grown out,
  • short nails that don’t catch or break in your shoes,
  • having leftover gel polish taken off by a specialist rather than peeling it off yourself,
  • moisturising the skin around the nails, because dry skin cracks more easily,
  • breathable socks and comfortable shoes that don’t squeeze your toes.

Rebuilding nails after gel polish takes time. The same is true for nails after builder gel.

Sometimes part of the nail is missing or so damaged that it exposes the nail bed. At your visit we’ll tell you whether toenail reconstruction could help.

When to see a podologist

Book a visit if, for example:

  • the lifted part gets bigger from week to week,
  • the nail or the gap underneath has turned green,
  • your toe hurts or the skin around the nail is red,
  • after the gel polish comes off, the nail is thin, cracks or splits into layers,
  • you’re not sure whether you can go back to gel polish.

Every procedure starts with a chat and a nail assessment, and at the end you get home-care advice. If the problem is outside our scope, we’ll tell you who to see.

A dark spot under the nail after gel polish

A dark, purple or black spot under the nail usually has nothing to do with the gel polish itself. It may be a bruise after a knock or pressure from a tight shoe. We explain how to recognise it and what to do on our bruised toenail page. If the spot appeared without any injury, show it to a specialist.

Questions about toenails after gel polish

Does gel polish always weaken the nail?

Not always. A lot depends on how hard the nail is filed and whether the gel polish is taken off gently, without peeling. Breaks between applications matter too. When the nail gets thin, soft or starts to lift from the nail bed, take a break and show the nail to a podologist.

How long does nail recovery after gel polish take?

It depends on how fast the nail grows. A damaged nail doesn’t repair itself in place; it gradually grows out, and a new nail growing from the base takes its place. Toenails grow slowly, so it’s a process that takes months. A break from gel polish, short nails and regular care of the skin around the nail all help.

Will onycholysis after gel polish go away on its own?

The lifted part won’t reattach to the nail bed. It grows out with the nail and is gradually trimmed back. The new nail can stick to the nail bed again if the cause goes away, for example, back-to-back gel polish. Read more about onycholysis of the toenail and how we care for it on the service page.
