Many people start with pharmacy products or home remedies, but with a deep wart on the sole the result is often weak. Other practices also offer methods that we describe below. At ORTHOPODO, our podiatry practice in Mokotów, we work on the wart with a podiatry method, without a scalpel. First, we check whether the spot on your foot is a wart or a corn. Below we explain what each option can do and when it's worth booking a visit.

Where a plantar wart comes from

A plantar wart is a viral wart. The virus gets in through tiny breaks in the skin, and warmth and moisture help it along. On the sole, a wart grows differently than elsewhere: with every step, your body weight pushes it deeper into the skin. That’s why it can feel like a stone in your shoe when you walk. It’s also why home remedies don’t always reach it.

We explain what a plantar wart looks like and whether it’s contagious on our plantar warts page.

Home remedies for plantar warts

A home remedy is usually the first step, because it’s easy to get and doesn’t need a visit. A shallow, fresh wart sometimes disappears, while a deep one pressed into the sole can be stubborn. Below we look at what people reach for at home and what to watch out for.

Pharmacy products

At the pharmacy you can buy liquids, gels and plasters for warts on the feet. They contain acids that gradually peel away the hardened skin of the wart. The acid can’t tell a wart from healthy skin, so it’s easy to end up with irritation, redness or a painful crack beside it. Follow the leaflet and protect the skin around the wart. If the skin turns very red, stings or cracks, stop using the product and show your foot to a specialist.

Greater celandine and other home remedies

Greater celandine is a plant with orange sap that people traditionally dab on warts on their feet. The sap is caustic, so it can easily irritate or burn healthy skin. The same goes for garlic or vinegar: these are remedies passed down through generations, and it’s hard to predict whether they will help you. If you try them anyway, watch the skin around the wart and stop at the first sign of irritation.

What not to do at home

Don’t cut the wart with scissors or a razor blade, and don’t pick at it. Bleeding skin easily spreads the virus to nearby areas, and the wound can get infected. Don’t burn the wart yourself, and don’t combine several products at once. Sometimes an attempt like this leaves a wound while the wart stays where it was. Don’t use a file or pumice stone that has touched the wart on healthy skin, and don’t lend it to anyone.

Freezing plantar warts

Freezing is a method where the wart is chilled to a very low temperature. The frozen skin dies off and after a while comes away together with the wart. Pharmacies sell home freezing kits, and other specialists use the method in their own practices. With a home kit, follow the instructions carefully, because freezing for too long can damage healthy skin. With a deep wart on the foot, freezing sometimes has to be repeated, and the skin can stay sensitive for a while afterwards.

We don’t offer freezing at ORTHOPODO. We describe it because it’s worth knowing about before you choose how to deal with a wart. In our practice we use a podiatry method without a scalpel, which we describe below.

Laser for plantar warts

Laser is a method where a beam of light heats and destroys the wart tissue. It’s offered by practices that have the right equipment and staff trained to use it. Afterwards the area usually needs to be rested, and the skin heals gradually.

We don’t use laser at ORTHOPODO and don’t have this equipment. We work on warts with podiatry instruments, as described in the next section. If you’re not sure where to start, you can come in for a foot assessment first.

The podiatry procedure at ORTHOPODO

We start our podiatry procedure for plantar warts with a chat and a foot assessment. We check whether it really is a wart, how deep it goes and whether new ones have appeared nearby.

Then we work on the wart with specialist podiatry instruments, without a scalpel. We follow hygiene standards and use soothing products if needed. In the majority of cases the procedure is well tolerated.

A wart rarely goes after one session, so we usually plan further visits. We set the gap between them based on how your skin responds. After each visit you get home-care advice: how to look after the skin around the wart and what to avoid until the next appointment.

Plantar wart care takes about 30 minutes and costs from 50 PLN. The specialist confirms the final price after assessing your foot, and you’ll find other prices in our price list. If the wart needs another specialist, we’ll tell you who to see.

When to book a visit rather than wait

A wart on your foot is no reason to panic, but in some situations it’s better not to wait. Book a visit if, for example:

the wart hurts when you walk or makes you change the way you put your foot down,

more warts appear, or new ones show up next to an old one,

home remedies haven’t made a difference for a long time,

the skin around the wart is irritated from products,

you’re not sure whether it’s a wart or a corn.

A wart and a corn are easy to mix up, and each needs a different approach. At your visit we’ll assess the spot and tell you what it is and what comes next.

Questions about plantar warts

Do home remedies for plantar warts work?

Sometimes, but the result is hard to predict. A shallow wart may go after a pharmacy product, while a deep wart on the sole often doesn’t respond. If nothing changes after several weeks of regular use, the skin is irritated or the wart hurts, come in for a foot assessment.

Do you offer freezing or laser at ORTHOPODO?

No. Freezing and laser are methods offered by other practices and other specialists. At ORTHOPODO we use a podiatry method: we work on the wart with specialist instruments, without a scalpel. We assess your foot before the procedure, and afterwards you get home-care advice and a date for the next visit if you need one.

How many podologist visits does a plantar wart need?

Usually more than one. The number depends on how deep the wart is, how many there are and how the skin responds to each session. Each visit takes about 30 minutes, and the price starts from 50 PLN. We plan your visits after the first foot assessment.
